Winterwood Farm |   Maidstone, Kent

BTH were appointed as Architects to design this new packhouse facility at Winterwood Farm near Maidstone, Kent.

The new 62,000 sq/ft fruit packing facility is located over two floors with the ground floor comprising of offices, warehouse and staff facilities including canteen, gym and internet café. The upper floor is dedicated to the packing and storing of fruit with four packing lines and 17 no. cold storage units. The packhouse on the upper floor is serviced by a 4 dock loading bay at one end and a delivery bay with industrial platform lift at the other.

Due to the size and location of the new packhouse the planning process played an important part in the development of the design. One of the most important aspects of the building was to minimize its impact on the surrounding area, which meant sinking the building 2.5m into the ground to reduce its visual effect.

The sensitive use of colours, a low profile curved roof and minimal external lighting all helped to ensure that the building fits well into the surroundings. It can hardly be seen from even 2-300m away, helped with careful landscaping and tree planting.
