Armoury Building | Peter Symonds College, Winchester
BTH were appointed as Architects to design a new classroom block to replace the existing single storey Armoury Building at Peter Symonds College, Hampshire.
It is understood that the existing building was constructed in the mid 1930s and was originally used for Cadets and their armoury up until approximately 1993.
Situated on the southern boundary of the Peter Symonds site, along a predominantly residential road, great care was taken in the design of the building and use of materials to ensure the building fitted within its context and surroundings sitting in harmony with its adjacent residential neighbours.
The new building occupies the same footprint as the original, is single storey as the original with a ridge height less than the height to eaves level of the existing properties.
The roof was designed as a mono-pitch with the main area covered in a sedum green roof to help the building sit within its context of mature trees and established landscaping set down below the level of the college playing fields above.
The new building provides a remote teaching space on campus from the main college buildings including two classrooms and an access wc.
